Audit deliverables

What should you receive from a technical audit?

Agree a report that connects the business decision, evidence, limitations and actions your team can review.

Start with the decision and the boundary

Before the review begins, agree what decision the report should support and who will read it. Record the systems, versions, environments and period in scope. State exclusions and sampling choices. A clear boundary lets the reader understand how far the conclusions can be used.

Make each finding traceable

A useful finding describes the observation, the evidence behind it and its significance. Separate what was observed from assumptions and open questions. Explain the possible consequences and the conditions under which they matter. Where material was unavailable or contradictory, record the limitation rather than filling the gap with certainty.

Give recommendations an order and an owner

A list of issues does not explain where the team should begin. For each recommended action, record the reason, priority, dependencies and proposed responsibility. Define how completion can be checked. The client confirms the responsible people and implementation decisions; the report should make those decisions easier to discuss.

Serve management and technical readers

An executive summary should bring together the important risks, choices and decisions. The technical record should retain enough detail for authorized teams to examine the findings and plan the work. Agree who receives each part and how sensitive material is handled. Keep the summary consistent with the evidence and its limitations.

Review the report together

Use the findings discussion to challenge assumptions, clarify unanswered questions and agree the next steps. Follow-up can check selected changes against the agreed criteria. I personally conduct the review, prepare the report and discuss the recommendations. The public report outline shows its structure; all engagement information stays between me and the client’s authorized recipients.
